COMMUNICATION AS AN OBJECT OF STUDY: RESEARCH IN COMMUNICATION Topic 01. Defining the object of study Communication theory The communication theory helps in: - Cultivate critical thinking skills. The general approach that we will talk about is the critical one, that helps to analyse critically the reality.
- Recognise the breadth and depth of research. The intellectual effort that is devoted to understand things.
- Make sense of personal life experiences.
- Fosters self-awareness. How we function in society, our identity, etc. Built by the media, it helps to be self-aware of who we are.
It has become a discipline itself. Then, it is a study that comes from many different perspectives, and there are many other disciplines that have come to the development of a communication theory. An example of these disciplines are: psychology, sociology (in mass communication, it’s a social process; therefore, sociology it’s important when studying the media and the communication), education, anthropology (it is the study of a culture), economics (it is an important economic activity that comes from the media), languages, etc. Everything in the social area, really.
That’s why the communication theory, from its beginning, has a multidisciplinary approach.
If the communication from the theory are separated: - Theory. Generalization, an attempt to describe a phenomenon, usually related with an aspect of the reality.
- Communication. Ability to use symbols to exchange information.
Mass communication The mass communication usually includes institutional communicators that employ media to deliver mass messages to mass audiences. The usual understanding of mass communication goes from top to bottom, there is no relation from the bottom to the top, since the information goes from top to bottom.
The communication theory usually deals with mass communication, not only communication in general.
Lasswell’s model of communication The ingredients of every communication act. It’s a good method to describe and explain old communication or the traditional mass communication. For example, this method is very well suited to explain propagandistic messages. Yet, nowadays it’s old-fashioned. Another problem that has this method is that it is one directioned only. It’s a method invented in the ’40 ’50. It tells about the most important ingredients of the mass communication models, so it’s good because it explains some phenomenons.
