Pecola drinks milk, because of the whiteness of it. // Material culture: all the objects in a culture that speak about that culture. We extract meaning from these ‘things’. Creole (involving race). Mastership. ‘Black women exploitation’. White women did not escape from this.
It’s about re-inserting the voices, speaking the unspeakable (T. Morrison). It’s difficult to write down traumatic experiences. Post-slavery traumatic experience and metaphorical healing.
Transference of the fathers hatred on the weakest, the little girl, we understand further on that this is an act of survival.
PAGE 150. Focalization is the most important, most penetrating, and most subtle means of manipulation. Focalization accounts for the lens with which readers approach a narrative and considers the role of the reader in the relation of a narrative. The point of view is from the executioner, not the victim. She’s questioning us as readers. T. Morrison recreates American history and its focalization from the point of view of the executioners. She is not given the privilege to utter a word. We cannot trust this scene, this adds a new layer of oppression. She is even oppressed by her mother/father -within the black community-.
This perversity questions the way we tell stories, she’s questioning American discourse. These anti-heroes are still heroes, protagonists.
PAGE 100. Blacks and whites live very separately. Mrs Breedlove has adopted a new persona: that of the black mommy, which requires her to love the white children much more than her own. Process of whitening, of assimilation that Morrison describes at the end of the chapter.
PAGE 178. She’s so loveless that she has to invent a friend for herself. Only at the end of the text we hear Pecola, she finally has a voice of her own.
