Portfolio (Estada Local) Name: Iván Escuder Bustos Professor: Robert Hooworth Date: 1/12/16 Universitat Pompeu Fabra INDEPENDENT LANGUAGE LEARNING ACTION PLAN What languages other than your mother tongue do you know? How would you describe your level ? 1. Language skills Apart from my mother tongue I speak Catalan, English and a little bit of French 2. Motivation Why are you learning English ? (focus on both course-related reasons and personal motivation) First of all, I started the Translation and interpreting degree for the English, I knew I want to do something related with that language for years so I decided to start Translation because I can learn more languages. About the course-related reasons I’ve always thought that is necessary to have a high English level, by this way nowadays is possible travel to any country.
3. Where are you now ? Assess your current ability in English in each of the following areas : Speaking Strengths / Weaknesses The speaking is my greatest weakness. I feel nervous and words don’t go out of my mouth Listening In my opinion I think I have good skills for the listening, I listen English music all day and I see English series every day.
Reading Reading is one of my strengths, I read a text and then I am perfectly capable to answer questions about it.
Writing Writing is other of my strengths I think, if I have a theme to write I start writing. Through the years I’ve learned to combine different tenses and many other things in a writing to be what the teacher (for example) is asking for.
I think I’m not bad at grammar but I’m not perfect either.
Grammar 4. Where you would like to be ? Describe what you would like to be able to do in English. Think about each of the necessary skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar) : a) In the long term Goals -Improve my spoken skills (speaking) -Distinguish the different types of English accent (listening) -Be able to understand all that someone is speaking (listening) b) in the short term (e.g. by the end of the year) Goals -Improve my grammar skills (grammar) -Understand all of what I’m reading (reading) 5. How are you going to achieve these goals ? What sort of activities will you do to develop each of these skills (e.g. Speaking I will find native speakers to practise with. Grammar I will do grammar exercises on the computer ).
Speaking I am going to meet with an Exchange student in upf for improve this skills.
Listening Watching TV series or movies, paying special attention for those things I don’t know Reading Reading books in English or English newspaper’s articles Writing Doing some writings, in which one I could practice different things like present , past, etc.
Grammar I’ll do exercises from an C1 book 6. What resources and materials are you going to use ? In order to complete this list, go to the library and look at the available materials for your level. Discuss your needs with your tutor who will tell you about other available resources. N.B. Resources can also be human Resources/materials Speaking/ Listening I joined a thing that I’m going to speak English with an Erasmus student so he/she will be my “English partner”.
Reading I will read some books for improve my Reading skills.
Writing I will do lots of writings during the week.
Grammar I went to the library and I took a C1 English book to practice grammar.
LANGUAGE ACTIVITY RECORD DATE: 26/10/16 BEFORE YOU BEGIN what are you hoping to achieve during this session and through these activities? Aims and objectives This week I think I would focus in the vocabulary of the series I see weekly.
WHEN YOU FINISH 1. The Activity Give a detailed description of the activity you have done and the resources used.
To improve my listening I am watching films and series in English, although I saw series in English before, I’ve hardly ever seen a film in English.
2. The Learning Experience What did you learn from this activity? This does not just need to be new language or vocabulary, you might have improved a skill, or gained knowledge about the country.
I see regularly a serie called Once upon a time. This serie is about tale characters coming to life, for example Snow White, The Evil Queen, Peter Pan and Hook, Belle and a lot of more characters. This week episode I learn a word that I think I know, it’s very easy but I didn’t know the meaning. The word is wicked, I knew the word evil but not wicked and I think now I will use more that word. I also learnt words and expressions such as “I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down”; gloat over (that in Spanish is “regodearse”) and a new use for the “very” that can be used to say “mismo”: This very blade, for the very first time… From Arrow I learnt what the meaning of “Snoop into” is; from The big bang theory I learnt “Wingman”; from Mom I learnt “Hint”, “Seizure”, “No rip lacks for a patch”, from Supergirl I learnt “Wealthy” and from Quantico I learnt the expression “Handle it” and “Blackmail”.
3.
What Next? Which areas do you need to develop further and how do you intend to do this? I don’t know what to improve now but I will think something during the week.
Short term plans (e.g. your next activity) Practice vocabulary reading a book Long term plans (e.g. during the year) Understand the whole book 4. Evaluation What went well with the activity? What didn’t go so well? How are you progressing in this area? What difficulties are you finding? I enjoy this activity because I’ve been writing about my favourite TV series but it’s true that I am nervous all the week waiting for a new chapter and being all the time pausing the video to note the new words is a little uncomfortable, so I think I will found another way to practice listening and vocabulary LANGUAGE ACTIVITY RECORD DATE: 26/10/16 BEFORE YOU BEGIN Aims and objectives What are you hoping to achieve during this session and through these activities? I have an idea about what I want to do so I hope I could improve my writing and my listening.
WHEN YOU FINISH 1. The Activity Give a detailed description of the activity you have done and the resources used.
With the help of internet I wrote a Harry Potter’s review. By this way, starting for something easy, I hope to improve my writing.
2. The Learning Experience What did you learn from this activity? This does not just need to be new language or vocabulary, you might have improved a skill, or gained knowledge about the country.
This week I saw Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone, I saw it before but in Spanish. Watching it in English I learnt so many words, whether the Harry Potter’s world or the real life. One example is mud blood, for the magic universe.
3.
What Next? Which areas do you need to develop further and how do you intend to do this? I need to develop my speaking but I am waiting to Lisa gilbert, she has to say me who is my “Parella linguistica”. Meanwhile, I will do a discussion of the film I saw with a partner; by this way we can practice it.
Short term plans (e.g. your next activity) Practice my vocabulary and my speaking.
Long term plans (e.g. during the year) If I can, improve in all the skills.
4. Evaluation What went well with the activity? What didn’t go so well? How are you progressing in this area? What difficulties are you finding? What I think it went well is the fact that I like watch movies and series so I enjoy practicing English by this method. What I think that didn’t go so well is that when I saw a serie, if there was a word I didn’t understand I could know its meaning by the context. Now, I have to pay special attention and if there is a word that I don’t know, I have to stop and look for it to ensure I know the meaning.

Later Harry believed that his teacher Severus Snape is behind the stone to return Lord Voldemort to a human form. Then he discovered that Professor Quirrell, the Defence against the Dark Arts teacher, is who really goes behind the stone and Snape was protecting Harry all the time. Finally it can be seen Voldemort in the back of Quirrell’s head, who tried to convince Harry to give him the stone but Harry refuse.
Quirinus attempted to kill harry but he touched him and her hand became dust, he decided to take the stone but Harry touch his face causing the teacher’s death. Because of them bravery, they are rewarded with points that make their house win the House Cup.
LANGUAGE ACTIVITY RECORD DATE: 2/11/16 BEFORE YOU BEGIN Aims and objectives What are you hoping to achieve during this session and through these activities? Improve, even a little, my vocabulary.
WHEN YOU FINISH 1. The Activity Give a detailed description of the activity you have done and the resources used.
This week I started to read a book called Shadow hunters. I watched the film and I follow the TV serie and I like it so I thought to start reading the book.
2. The Learning Experience What did you learn from this activity? This does not just need to be new language or vocabulary, you might have improved a skill, or gained knowledge about the country.
The book is ok. Is entertaining and I like it, the only problem is that there are a lot of words that I don’t know, that’s because I decided to note all the words I don’t know in a list with the meaning. It’s a little bit exhausting because it’s not only reading but also is look for the word and note it.
3.
What Next? Which areas do you need to develop further and how do you intend to do this? I need to improve the Speaking but I have to wait for my partner Sandra to see when we can meet.
Short term plans (e.g. your next activity) Improve my writing skills Long term plans (e.g. during the year) Be able to write correctly 4. Evaluation What went well with the activity? What didn’t go so well? How are you progressing in this area? What difficulties are you finding? The activity of this week was funny. I describe my favourite serie and I enjoy it a lot and I also enjoyed the book but as I explained before is a little boring.

I watched the film Mean Girls.
2. The Learning Experience What did you learn from this activity? This does not just need to be new language or vocabulary, you might have improved a skill, or gained knowledge about the country.
I love the experience because that film is one that I saw many times but never in English and it’s a new experience. Actually I like more watch films in English because it’s more realistic, I think you can see the personality that the director give to the character, thing that in the translation may be lost.
3.
What Next? Which areas do you need to develop further and how do you intend to do this? Speaking Short term plans (e.g. your next activity) Speak more English Long term plans (e.g. during the year) Use English in my normal life 4. Evaluation What went well with the activity? What didn’t go so well? How are you progressing in this area? What difficulties are you finding? I finish this activity with happiness because I think I improve, even a little, my writing skills.

4. Evaluation What went well with the activity? What didn’t go so well? How are you progressing in this area? What difficulties are you finding? This week the difficulties were speak all time I was with Sandra in English because we ran out of conversation.
LANGUAGE ACTIVITY RECORD DATE: 14/11/16 BEFORE YOU BEGIN Aims and objectives What are you hoping to achieve during this session and through these activities? Improve my writing skills WHEN YOU FINISH 1. The Activity Give a detailed description of the activity you have done and the resources used.
I thought to do a writing of one of my favourite series.
2. The Learning Experience What did you learn from this activity? This does not just need to be new language or vocabulary, you might have improved a skill, or gained knowledge about the country.
I did a review of my favourite serie, Once Upon a Time. I think I was very excited because I explained the six seasons that the serie has.
3.
What Next? Which areas do you need to develop further and how do you intend to do this? Speaking that I actually practice but I will explain in another Language Activity Report.
Short term plans (e.g. your next activity) Practice Grammar Long term plans (e.g. during the year) Pass the B2/C1 English exam.
4. Evaluation What went well with the activity? What didn’t go so well? How are you progressing in this area? What difficulties are you finding? I enjoy doing the activity because talk about your favourite something is always exciting but in this case more because I love explain my friends about the series I watch, even if they don’t care.
Once Upon a Time The serie was aired for the first time on October 23, 2011. The main characters are:         Ginnifer Goodwin as Snow White / Mary Margaret Blanchard Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan / Dark Swan Lana Parrilla as Evil Queen / Regina Mills Josh Dallas as Prince Charming / David Nolan Jared S. Gilmore as Henry Mills Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin / Beast / Crocodile / Mr.
Gold Colin O'Donoghue as Captain Killian "Hook" Jones (seasons 2–) Rebecca Mader as Wicked Witch of the West / Zelena (recurring seasons 3–4; main season 5–) Now I will explain the plot of the serie, a little bit of the seasons and the characters.
The serie is about the character of fairy tales transported to the real world. A boy called Henry goes to a woman’s house called Emma Swan (her real mother) and he tells her that she’s the Saviour. He explains her that his adoptive mother Regina, The Evil Queen, used a powerful curse, obtained from Mr. Gold (then Rumplestiltskin). The curse made that all the citizens of the Enchanted Forest appears in a estrange city called Storybrooke, in Maine, where nobody remembers anything except Regina, that is the mayor of the city, and time doesn’t pass until Emma arrive. The Saviour will return the happy endings to the characters but before she has to believe in magic.
Emma will discover that Snow White/Mary Margaret is her mother and Prince Charming/ David, is her father.
Every season have different evil characters of different fairy tales. At the first season The Evil Queen is who tries to finish with the happy endings. In the second season, despite having broken the curse, they don’t return to the Enchanted Forest and thanks to Rumplestiltskin magic is back in the city. The new evil characters in this season are Hook and Cora, Regina’s mother who we can know as the Queen of Hearts. At the second half of the season enter to sinister operatives that want to destroy magic. Then in the third season we will know that these operatives were working for Peter Pan, who kidnap Henry and takes him to Neverland to obtain the “Heart of the Truest Believer”.
Later in Storybrooke, Pan makes another curse, returning all the character to the Enchanted Forest and leaving Emma and Henry alone in New York without remembering anything, because they don’t belong to the fairy tale’s world. In the second half of the season the characters are mysteriously brought back to Storybrook without knowing what happened in the last year. Then another evil character appears, the Wicked Witch of the West from the Land of Oz, Zelena, who wants to change the past. She almost gets it but Emma save the day again. She travels to the past and prevents Zelena’s plans. In her back to the future she brings unintentionally a jar where is Elsa of Arendelle (Frozen), what started the fourth season.
Elsa is looking for her sister, Anna, with the help of Snow White while Regina is looking for the author of the book to finally have his own happy ending, due to she changed.
Then they discover that the evil character was the Snow Queen, Elsa’s aunt, who wants Elsa and Emma to have their own family. After they defeat her, at the second part of the season, Mr. Gold (Rumpelstiltskin) brought Cruella De Vil, Maleficent and Ursula to Storybrooke to rewrite their happy endings. Eventually, Mr. Gold finds the author and convinces him to help. Then, Henry, trying to save his family decides that is the time to be a hero, that’s when he realise that is the new Author and makes Regina become a real hero. After that, the darkness inside Rumpelstiltskin’s heart comes out and tries to kill Regina. Emma in an attempt of saving her absorbs the darkness and becomes the new “Dark One”.
In the fifth season they went to Camelot to find Emma, who’s the new Dark One but she don’t want to, so she doesn’t use her powers. Finally, before she becomes Evil, like all the Dark Ones that exist before her, she does another curse. Before that, her fiancé, Hook, results deathly hurt and she decides to share the power of the Dark One so that he can live but as a result he will be another Dark One. When he realizes, he joins all the Dark Ones that existed before. When they appear, Hook finally knows that he did it bad so as they require a sacrifice, he dies. After that, Emma and the rest go to the Underworld, where Hades will make difficult the scape. Nowadays is emitting the sixth season where the observers don’t know what will happen.
Once Upon a Time is my favourite TV serie. I started watching it at the beginning of July and I love it. It’s true that I find the first season more boring than the others but it happen with most of the series because, I think, with time they’re going more interesting and if we compare, the first season lose.
LANGUAGE ACTIVITY RECORD DATE: 18/11/16 BEFORE YOU BEGIN Aims and objectives What are you hoping to achieve during this session and through these activities? I will practice my speaking skills.
WHEN YOU FINISH 1. The Activity Give a detailed description of the activity you have done and the resources used.
This week I met my friend Sandra and we’ve been doing an hour every day speaking in English about different things, it depends the day. This week we met on Monday 14th at 11, Tuesday at 10:30, Wednesday we met an hour and a half at 19, Thursday at 11:30 and Friday at 10:30.
2. The Learning Experience What did you learn from this activity? This does not just need to be new language or vocabulary, you might have improved a skill, or gained knowledge about the country.
I improved my English skills 3.
What Next? Which areas do you need to develop further and how do you intend to do this? I need to do some grammar Short term plans (e.g. your next activity) Practice my grammar skills Long term plans (e.g. during the year) Finish the grammar book that I found 4. Evaluation What went well with the activity? What didn’t go so well? How are you progressing in this area? What difficulties are you finding? This time it was easier but still complicated because I think is easier to speak about daily things than speak about a theme that a book gives you. We met next week to speak about normal things and I expect it will be easier.
LANGUAGE ACTIVITY RECORD DATE: 26/11/16 BEFORE YOU BEGIN Aims and objectives What are you hoping to achieve during this session and through these activities? Practice grammar WHEN YOU FINISH 1. The Activity Give a detailed description of the activity you have done and the resources used.
As I said weeks ago I was looking for an English advanced book to do some exercises but I can’t find any because all the books that the library had about this level was theory and I was looking for exercises, so my mother remembered me that I have a book that I bought in Bachiller that was as the one I was looking for. The wrong thing is that is a B2 level and I don’t know if it will be easy for me but I will try to do it.
2. The Learning Experience What did you learn from this activity? This does not just need to be new language or vocabulary, you might have improved a skill, or gained knowledge about the country.
After doing some use of English and Listening I see that is easy although sometimes I doubt and I fail the answer. In my opinion it’s ok to do the book because, despite I’m doing English exercises to practice, sometimes I think that my level is lower than a year ago so I will keep doing the book. I did all I said before excepts pages 136,137,138,155,157,158 and 159 because I start the curse with the book and then I left this classes, so the rest wasn’t done.
3.
What Next? Which areas do you need to develop further and how do you intend to do this? I will practice the speaking because next Thursday I have to do a presentation and I did a power point and a thousand words work (that I think it should be considered writing practice).
Short term plans (e.g. your next activity) Speaking, know how to say the names of the Greek Gods and be able to be clear in the speaking.
